The Secret Social Life of Artworks
After-hours conversations at the museum
What do artworks talk about when the museum is closed?
Do they gossip? talk about the weather? entertain thoughts of impossible romances?
What kind of invisible drama plays out on a daily basis without us noticing?
By bringing together art from different periods, countries, forms and styles, museums create situations of forced cohabitation, which in-turn must lead to interesting conversations.
The Secret Social Life of Artworks invites visitors to eavesdrop on these conversations.
This project was made during Museomix, a worldwide 2-day hackathon inviting creators from all horizons to re-imagine the museum experience. I participated in the 2014 edition, which was hosted by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
The hackathon resulted in a prototype consisting of a conversation between two 18th century portraits: a painting (Mary Josephine Drummond, Condesa de Castelblanco) and a sculpture (Léopold de Médicis).
